In the days of one of the early kings of Scotland a party of his enemies lay in ambush near the castle to attack the royal train when they sallied out to hunt. A loyal henchman of the name of Murdoch discovering the treachery, but having no opportunity of giving timely intimation of it to the king, who was walking on the leads of the castle, attracted the monarch's atten tion by shooting an arrow through the neck of a raven seated on the ramparts and immediately afterwards transfixed two more with a single shot. The king, startled by the accuracy of the shot, exclaimed None but a Murdoch could send a shaft like that'
