Synopses & Reviews
Synopsis
Edition of eighteenth-century history of the theatre in Spain, of vital importance for our knowledge of drama in the period.
In 1785 Jose Antonio de Armona, Corregidor of Madrid and the highest authority in the theatrical administration of the day, completed the first systematic history of the theatre in Spain. He traces its evolution from the middle ages to his own day, concentrating not only on authors and works, but mainly on the theatre as an institution. The administration and policing of the theatres constitute the main dynamic of the work; having reflected on his own functions as Corregidor and Juez Protector of the Theatres, Armona carried out extensive research in his own municipal archive, assembling a rich corpus of documents. For this reason Armona's Memorias occupy an essential place in the Fuentes series. The volume includes an introduction, the complete text with extensive notes, and an appendix of associated documents, as well as indexes of plays, names, and places.

Synopsis
This new edition of Jos Antonio de Armona's Memorias cronolgicas offers for the first time a close critical analysis of the author's use of theatrical documentation, the core of his historic contribution to the study of Spanish theatre history. Armona's work is the first systematic history of the theatre in Spain, from the end of the Middle Ages to his own day. Though he includes a brief survey of Golden Age drama, he concentrates mainly on the theatre as an institution. As Corregidor (Mayor) of Madrid, Armona held the office of Protector, the highest authority in the administration of the public theatres and the theatrical profession, and the major part of his work is devoted to this subject. Having reflected on his own experience as Protector and the problems arising from disputes over jurisdiction, Armona traced the origins of these disputes through extensive research in his own municipal archives, assembling and copying a rich corpus of documents which elucidate this and many other aspects of theatrical history. His Memorias are therefore closely related to the municipal documentation published in earlier volumes of the Fuentes series, and need to be read in that context. CHARLES DAVIS was formerly Lecturer in Spanish at Queen Mary, University of London, and is currently a Ramn y Cajal Research Fellow at the University of Valencia.
