“Wasn’t that great!” Scott suddenly says. “The memorial service?” Craig asks. “Is that what you mean?” “No, man,” Scott tells him. “Life! The adventure! The whole thing. Wasn’t it Great?” Jon Krakauer’s book ‘Into Thin Air’ hit the best seller lists with a gripping account of the disastrous 1996 Everest season. Whilst it was generally accurate the whole story of that fateful day is so much bigger than any one book could depict and a lot of the protagonists were left superficially judged. Mountain Madness takes you inside the world of Scott Fisher, recounts where he came from and the ever adventurous path that led him to that one last challenge from which he was not to return. The story lets the reader gradually understand how Scott saw the world and instead of only seeing a gung ho expedition leader pushing his luck and operation to the limit you find someone with a true passion for what they are doing and an inspiring attitude of, if somewhat naïve, “it will all be alright”. Sadly the complexities of such a major expedition combined with the burden of a group of less than optimal climbers, the pressure to get clients to the top, the diminishing weather window and the eventual fateful storm pushed things to an unrecoverable point and an amazing man was lost to the mountain. If you have read ‘Into Thin air’ (which can leave you somewhat judgmental of Scott, Anatoli and others) then ‘Mountain Madness’ is essential reading to get a better understanding of the bigger picture, and lets you see the real people behind the story. Other worthwhile books on this topic are: The Climb - Anatoli Boukreev (essential reading if you have read 'Into Thin Air') Climbing High - Lene Gammelgard Mountain Madness - Robert Birkby Touching My Father’s Soul - Jamling Tenzing Norgay Doctor on Everest - Dr. Kenneth Kamler Sheer Will - Michael Groom High Exposure - David Breshears The Death Zone - Matt Dickinson Left For Dead - Beck Weathers After the Wind - Lou Kasischke
