Nell has a pet guinea pig named Fluffy, and Nell loves him. But when Nell starts first grade, some of the other children tell her that guinea pigs are for babies. Upset, Nell decides she needs a grown-up pet, but how can she ask her parents for a dog when she already has Fluffy? Nell makes a foolish and heartbreaking decision, and in the process learns an important lesson about peer pressure and the responsibilities of owning and loving a pet.
