About the Author
Sheri Spaine Long (Ph.D., UCLA) is an award-winning professor and Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she teaches language, literature, and culture courses at all levels. She has also directed study abroad programs in Latin America and Spain. Her research includes Madrid as a literary invention in contemporary Spanish prose and the development of materials for content-based language instruction. Since 2006, she has been the Editor of Foreign Language Annals, the official journal of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). She has served on the Board of Directors of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages and the Board of Directors of the Southern Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Her publications include six co-authored college textbooks as well as over 40 scholarly articles, notes and reviews on literature, culture, and foreign language education and policy. Awards from her university and professional organizations include the UAB Outstanding Woman Faculty Member (2005), special recognition in international education from the Universidad de Ja?n (2007), and the 2008 UAB Minority Health and Research Center Charles Barkley Excellence in Mentoring Award.Maria Carreira (Ph.D., Linguistics, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is an associate professor of Spanish in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the State University of California, Long Beach. Her current research focuses on Spanish as a world language, Spanish in the U.S., and teaching Spanish to native speakers (SNS). Her numerous publications and presentations focus on the definition of heritage learner, and standards, assessment, and teacher development for Spanish as a heritage language. She has designed and taught a wide variety of courses, including several specifically for heritage speakers of Spanish.Sylvia Madrigal Velasco (B.A., English, Yale University) has worked in foreign language publishing for 27 years. Her extensive career has included working with all the major higher education textbook publishers.
