Synopsis
Excerpt from Notitia Anglicana: A Concise Essay Upon the Nature, Rise, and Intent of Arms and Armory
I have feen moft Books of Note in this Faculty, upon which out late Writers have built, and perceiv'd Variety of Humours in their Authors, which Itake to be owing chiefly to national Afic iations and Cu floms. Andi have obferv'd too, that many of our late Writers have taken more Pains to mifconfirue or continue fome ufelefs Notions of thofe more antient Writers, than to improve their Beauties, or digeit their Writings to the Improvement of the Science in general. But what I molt wonder at, is, an unrea fonable Fondnefs which feems to flow in mofl of them to Antiquity; as if any commendable and ufefnl Cufiom loll of its real Ellimation and Efficacy, by (0 much as it wanted in Antiquity. I believe, I admire Honour and Arms as much as any Man, yet Reafon and Billory fhall fway mein Opinion.
