Synopsis
Excerpt from On Balance and Initialization
Quasi-geostrophic and quasi-nondivergent models do not represent an instantaneous compatibility condition between wind and pres sure field, consistent with the primitive equations describing the motion. Actually such a balance equation, in its general form or in any of its simplified forms, represents only an approximation to such a condition, obtained by neglecting certain terms in the equations from which it is derived. Indeed, the atmosphere itself is only approximately in geostrophic balance, rather than exactly in this state.
