I love the way Haruhi (the main character of this series) complains about the eccentricities of the filthy-rich students at Ouran High School. Relatable! What sets this series apart from other manga for me is the honest way Haruhi treats her own gender and apathetically rejects the way other characters try to restrict her to a binary. She is also casual about being in romantic situations with other girls, and she's a unique and wonderful character all-around.
The true heart of this series, however, comes from the comedy! It's rare that I actually laugh out loud while reading, but I had to put the first volume of this series down while I cackled. Some of the characters are just so over the top, I have to sigh and shake my head, but I love them all the same. Bisco Hatori is quite aware of the types of characters she's created and the tropes she's playing with, and her knowledge and skill as a writer make for an all-around surprising and pleasant reading experience! About the Author
Bisco Hatori made her manga debut with Isshun kan no Romance (A Moment of Romance) in LaLa DX magazine. The comedy Ouran High School Host Club is her breakout hit. When she's stuck thinking up characters' names, she gets inspired by loud, upbeat music (her radio is set to NACK5 FM). She enjoys reading all kinds of manga, but she's especially fond of the sci-fi drama Please Save My Earth and Slam Dunk, a basketball classic.
