Octavia Butler’s depiction of a distopian U.S. in the near future is both arresting and terrifying. Building on a story that started in The Parable of the Sower, Bulter tells the chilling account of Lauren Olamina's survival and her determination to expand the religion she created as a teenager: Earthseed. Born and raised in a suburb of Los Angeles, Lauren grew up during a chaotic era known as the Pox. Lauren is trained by her father to work with firearms and she teaches herself survival skills. After her home is destroyed and her family is killed, Lauren walks north to Humboldt County with a couple of surviving neighbors, collecting people she meets on the way. In Humboldt County, Lauren establishes Acorn, what she hopes will be the first of many communities dedicated to living by the principles of Earthseed. But as the political climate of the country changes, Washington turns to war against seditionist Alaska, and the fundamentalist Church of Christian America gets their leader installed in the White House, Acorn’s – and Lauren’s – future is in jeopardy. Here Butler deals with race, gender, corporate greed, political corruption, climate change and religious fanatism. Butler shows readers a world too close to ours for comfort and it’s not hard to imagine that everything she writes in these pages could very well happen.
