Synopses & Reviews
Robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery has been instrumental in the advancement of laparoscopy in adult urologic surgery. Radical prostatectomy is a perfect example. On the other hand, although laparoscopy has been utilized for several decades for the diagnosis and treatment of undescended testicles and ambiguous genitalia in the care of the pediatric patient, robotic technology has been slower to advance into the pediatric urology arena. However, the urologist is now commonly performing procedures such as robotic-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty due to the ease of the procedure compared to laparoscopy with standard equipment.
Pediatric Robotic Urology, a concise and comprehensive reference on robotic-assisted laparoscopy, is written specifically for urologists, general surgeons, residents, medical students, and midlevel providers caring for the pediatric urologic patient. Well-respected pediatric urologists will author these chapters containing bolded text to allow for identification of key words to assist the health care provider to rapidly review the essential aspects of a given topic. The chapters are also arranged into two sections to allow for easier access to the information: Introductory topics and surgical techniques. The basics of laparoscopy and robotic-assisted laparoscopy will be discussed along with specific surgical techniques which will be accompanied with illustrations and intraoperative photographs.
Review
From the reviews: "Each of the 19 chapters in this book is written by a knowledgeable expert urologist with additional expertise in robotic and laparoscopic pediatric urology. ... It is specifically designed for novices and those wishing to gain more experience in pediatric laparoscopic and robotic minimally invasive urological surgeries. ... The references are useful and up to date ... . The figures are of excellent quality and the index is easy to use." (Martin Allan Koyle, Doody's Review Service, December, 2009) "Edited by Cleveland professor J.S. Palmer, the book Pediatric Robotic Urology features more than 20 expert surgeons who contributed to and authored chapters in this book dedicated to robotic urology in paediatrics. ... All chapters are concise and richly illustrated with colour photographs. This textbook provides a comprehensive overview and would be very useful for paediatric (and adult) urologists who aim to develop robotic practice." (Paul Meria, European Urology Today, February/March, 2010) "This work for urologists, surgeons, and others who care for pediatric urologic patients overviews the use of robotic technology in pediatric urologic surgery. ... The art program includes color intraoperative photos and anatomical illustrations." (SciTech Book News, March, 2010)
Synopsis
Robotic technology has paved the way for new opportunities in pediatric urologic surgery. Where once laparoscopy was restricted to urological conditions in children such as undescended testicles and ambiguous genitalia, robotic techniques are now enabling the completion of greatly needed, more involved procedures. Written by highly respected surgeons, Pediatric Robotic Urology provides a state-of-the-art, comprehensive overview of the precise surgical techniques that are changing the practice of pediatric urologic surgery. Divided in two sections and covering both introductory topics and advanced surgical techniques, Pediatric Robotic Urology also includes myriad illustrations and photographs of intraoperative procedures. Developed for accessible reading, this invaluable title is a concise, yet broad reference that is certain to be of significant value to urologists, surgeons, and all health care providers who care for pediatric urologic patients.
