"The third edition of
Play Therapy with Children in Crisis has all the hallmarks of a Nancy Boyd Webb book: outstanding contributors; well-organized, integrated chapters; comprehensive coverage; and state-of-the-art knowledge. This is a superb text for graduate courses in social work and play therapy, and an up-to-date reference for practitioners."--David A. Crenshaw, PhD, private practice, Rhinebeck, New York "A unique addition to the clinical literature. The contributors provide insightful theoretical and case-based discussions of children struggling with very real--and very contemporary--trauma-related issues. The case transcripts, study questions, current references, and logical, thematic structure make this third edition a valuable resource both for the classroom and for those providing individual, group, and family intervention services."--Lawrence C. Rubin, PhD, LMHC, RPT-S, Mental Health Counseling Program, St. Thomas University, Miami, Florida "The scope of this book is enormous! Chapters include practical information regarding the treatment of children who have survived a wide range of traumatic events. Going beyond the basic principles of play therapy, the volume covers such far-reaching topics as differential diagnosis, trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy for children, and the vicarious traumatization experienced by clinicians. For both students and seasoned clinicians, this third edition is sure to provide something helpful and new to all of its readers."--Janine Shelby, PhD, Department of Psychiatry, University of California, Los Angeles "
Play Therapy with Children in Crisis has always been one of my recommended readings for MSW students in my class on practice with children and adolescents. The case studies accurately reflect the trauma and environmental difficulties that my students must address as they treat children in foster care, adoption, and child protection/prevention settings. Webb's theoretical formulations about crisis assessments are practical and helpful for the sophisticated graduate student."--Emily Jean McFadden, LMSW, School of Social Work, Grand Valley State University
"A much-needed and outstanding resource. The contributors clearly describe the most current research findings about trauma and crisis intervention and translate their knowledge into sound practice guidelines using interesting, in-depth case studies. The chapters are rich with therapeutic wisdom and insight. This impressive book will prove invaluable to professionals who work with children in a variety of settings, including mental health agencies, schools, social services, and private practice. Webb is to be commended for bringing together, in one volume, appropriate treatment interventions for the many forms of trauma experienced by children."--Cindy Miller-Perrin, PhD, Department of Psychology, Pepperdine University

"As crisis and trauma increasingly intrude into the lives of children and teens, Webb and her talented team of front-line clinicians once again help us to understand these kids' needs and the value of intervention using a wide range of play and expressive media. The volume captures the ever-evolving nature of trauma, its effects on our most vulnerable populations, and, most important, how clinicians across disciplines can be of help."--Lawrence C. Rubin, PhD, ABPP, LMHC, RPT-S, Department of Social Sciences and Counseling, Biscayne College, St. Thomas University
"This book does an eloquent job of combining both the child and adolescent foci of the trauma experience into a digestible text and guide for practitioners. It offers a variety of effective therapeutic interventions in a format suitable for new and seasoned clinicians alike. This is a useful text for a class focusing on child or youth trauma in social work, psychology, or counseling."--Julie Anne Laser, MSW, LCSW, PhD, Graduate School of Social Work, University of Denver
"Rarely is such an informative book so delightful to read. Clinicians at any level of professional development will appreciate the scope and depth of this updated, timely, trauma-focused book. Readers will finish this volume with an enormous advantage in understanding not only how crises affect youth, but also how to work effectively to promote adaptive coping, positive change, and growth."--Janine Shelby, PhD, Department of Psychiatry, University of California, Los Angeles
Review
"Nancy Boyd Webb has devoted a lifetime to play theory and practice: to observing, working with, and reporting on the play of troubled children. In this book, as in the first edition of
Play Therapy with Children in Crisis, she has brought together a stellar group of experts who write about a range of fascinating youngsters and their experiences in therapy. She has pulled these chapters together with grace, ensuring their readability and scholarship." --From the Foreword by Lenore Terr, MD, San Francisco, CA (author of
Unchained Memories and
Too Scared to Cry)
"The first edition of this volume was a stellar contribution to the field of play therapy--a standard against which other books must be measured. This second edition is an excellent continuation of a classic in our field." --Charles E. Schaefer, PhD, Co-director, Play Therapy Training Institute, Hackensack, New Jersey
"This book is filled to the brim with information and insight. There is something to be learned on every page. The key to helping children through play therapy is for the adult to become an ally for children in crisis. This book will help students and novice practitioners orient themselves and will help experienced clinicians improve their practice. It can be used as a text in MSW programs as well as trainings, workshops, and other settings in which clinical social workers and psychologists participate." --James Garbarino, PhD, Co-Director, Family Life Development Center, Professor, Human Development, Cornell University
"Mental health practitioners will treasure this work, recommend it to colleagues, and keep their copies nearby for reference. Material from actual play therapy sessions brings children's voices and play behaviors to life and affords insight into their experiences of fear, confusion, and helplessness. Annotations by the therapists reveal their own thoughts, feelings, and clinical strategies, enriching the reader's understanding of the complexities of treatment. I enthusiastically recommend this book for advanced courses in child psychiatry and clinical psychology, social work, and psychiatric nursing. Instructors and students will appreciate its clarity of presentation, the manner in which theory and practice are integrated, and the penetrating, thoughtful study questions following each chapter." --Beverly James, LCSW, author of Treating Attachment-Trauma Problems in Children
