"Rank & Gravity" is a long awaited study of the life and times of a forgotten patriot at the beginnings of our country. John Armstrong came from County Antrim, Ireland and settled in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was a surveyor, and touched practically everyone in colonial America. He was instrumental in building a string of forts in PA while serving in the Militia. In 1756, he destroyed the Lenape (Delaware) stronghold at Kittanning, and was celebrated throughout the colony. Served under Gen. John Forbes on the expedition to capture the Forks of the Ohio (now Pittsburgh). General in Revolutionary War, friend of George Washington, and served in both the Pennyslvania Legislature and Congress. William Betts spent a lifetime researching and producing this masterpiece on this hero. Shortly after publishing it, unfortunately he died. A must read for any serious student of the pre-revolutionary times in colonial America. Outstanding.
