Exploring the notion of social exclusion in sub-Saharan Africa, this monograph summarizes available baseline indicators of the scale of inequality. Focusing upon five selected countriesBotswana, Mozambique, South Africa, Ethiopia, and Nigeriathis study highlights the World Health Organizations Commission on Social Determinants of Health and its most important objective: to leverage policy change by turning existing public health knowledge into actionable global and national agendas. Summarizing policy and program appraisals conducted by the Social Exclusion Knowledge Network, this analysis outlines the factors that enable and hinder policy implementation, offering useful insights on how this same implementation can be made more effective.
About the Author
Laetitia Rispel works for the Centre for Health Policy in the School of Public Health at the University of the Witwatersrand. She is a former executive director of the social aspects of HIV/AIDS and health research program at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). She is also the former head of the Gauteng health department. Cesar da Sousa is based at the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane in Maputo, Mozambique. Boitumelo Molomo works for South Africa's Power Utility, ESKOM. She is a former intern in the social aspects of HIV/AIDS and health research program at the HSRC.
