Excerpt from Recovery of Government Waste Paper: Message From the President of the United States, Submitting, in Response to Senate Resolution of February 21, 1913, Additional Information Relative to the Saving in Recovery of Government Waste Paper
The principal difference between this method as compared with the closed tank method is that the old papers are cooked in open tanks at atmospheric pressure equal to 212 F. And a solution of soda ash is used. The cooking operation 18 carried on from 10 to 16 hours, at the end of which time the stock is washed, bleached, and run into drainers, as in the first method described, with the _same time requirements The loss of fiber due to this process is from 20 to 40 per cent and is less than the first method, due to a decrease in both temperature and pressure. As well as a decrease in strength of chemicals used.
