Synopsis
Excerpt from Report on the Memorials of the Seneca Indians and Others: Accepted November 21, 1840, in the Council of Massachusetts
Christians, and that there are not less than two hundred and forty professors of religion among the Senecas and Tuscaroras. The Friends, with that liberality and Christian spirit for which their society has always been distinguished, have had a settlement among the Senecas for many years, at which the Indians have been instruct ed in the rudiments of learning, and in agriculture, and the mechanic arts. It is natural for them to feel a deep interest in those who have so long been under their guid ance and protection.
From a very early period Massachusetts has been, to a certain extent, the guardian of the Senecas and they now come to us, and entreat our intervention to save them from the loss of all the lands and improvements they possess.
The Senecas Claim to own four large and valuable tracts of land in the state of New York, called Reser vations, and which are as follows, viz.
