Rule of the Bone is my favorite book, and the best I read in the last decade (1999-2000). It is a quintessentially American story, an exploration of race, class and gender, exploitation and violence, love and human relationship, wrapped in a compelling coming-of-age story. Russell Banks loves his flawed, damaged characters and you will, too. The writing is elegant, edgy, real. I've read several of Banks' other novels, and I think he is incredible -- the best living American writer -- but Rule of the Bone is his best.
