On July 4th, 1976, as the United States was celebrating its bicentennial, a crack team of Israeli commandos stunned the world with a brilliant and daring hostage-rescue mission in Africa. Under the leadership of 30-year-old Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Netanyahu, known to his soldiers as "Yoni", the paramilitary unit freed 103 innocent captives held by international terrorists and Idi Amin's Ugandan army. Netanyahu was killed in battle, but his courage and devotion to duty made him a legend throughout the world. Now, in honor of Israel's 50th anniversary, here are the letters this extraordinary young man wrote to his family and friends over a 13-year period -- letters which provide an intimate look into the soul of one of Israel's most enduring heroes.
