This book, the fifth of a series in contemporary service-learning topics published by the University of Indianapolis Press, has emerged from presentations at the Fourth International Symposium on Service-Learning held in China in September 2011. The contributors to this text are researchers, educators, and administrators of service-learning pedagogy, theory, and practice from many countries and diverse disciplines. The chapters inside provide the reader with an understanding of the broad range of topics in internationalization and pedagogy of service-learning in higher education. This collection provides insights on some of the most pertinent issues and best practices in contemporary service-learning: institutionalization, the formation of international partnerships, service-learning pedagogy, and evaluation.
About the Author
Dr. Mark Wiegand is professor and director of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Bellarmine University. He teaches anatomy and is interested in the role of service learning and professional development in physical therapy education. Dr. Wiegand received his degree in physical therapy from the University of Kansas, his master-s degree from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and his PhD from the University of Louisville. In 2002 Dr. Wiegand received the Outstanding Physical Therapist Service Award from the Kentucky Physical Therapy Association, and was a Bellarmine University Wyatt Fellowship recipient in 2007 and a 2008 Louisville Health Enterprises Network Fellow. He is married to Judy Wiegand, is the father of five adult children, and has three grandchildren.Phylis Lan Lin, PhD, is Associate Vice President for International Partnerships and Professor of Sociology at the University of Indianapolis. She is also Senior Vice President of Zhejiang Yuexiu University of Foreign Languages-University of Indianapolis International College in China. Dr. Lin has several additional titles at the University of Indianapolis, including director of Asian Programs and the Executive Director of the University of Indianapolis Press. She has a PhD in Sociology from the University of Missouri, Columbia. She has organized and chaired several international conferences, including four in service-learning. She has written and edited more than fifteen books in Chinese and English. In 2011, she co-authored Service-Learning: Theory and Practice in Higher Education. The book was co-published by Zhejiang University Press and University of Indianapolis Press.
