Amazing literature about a fascinating time in history. Few know that Florida was really the final frontier and the Everglades the final hidden wilderness. A superior story well told.

Matthiessen's reconstructed trilogy improved upon what I had already considered a great American novel. Nothing from the last decade really comes close to the level of writing found here. As with my original reading of the individual books, I still favor the first part, but the following parts hold together much stronger here. Honorable mention has to go to Richard Powers', The Echo Maker; Vikram Chandra's, Sacred Games; Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's, Half a Yellow Sun; Louis De Berniéres', Birds without Wings; Kiran Desai's, Jnheritance of Loss; Colson Whitehead's, John Henry Days; and Orham Pamuk's, Snow.

I previously read Killing Mr. Watson, Lost Man's River, and Bone by Bone, so reading Shadow Country was a review and a reminder and a re-visit to an enchanting part of the country which is completely foreign to me.

a candidate for the great American novel -- not just this decade.

_Shadow Country_ is a wonderful book that one will want to read again and again in order to catch each intriguing detail. The mysterious characters with their bizarre personalities remind one of some of the great Faulkner characters. The original three separate books, which Matthiessen has now joined into one book, are presented in an unusual manner, which is engaging to the reader. This is a must read.
