Synopses & Reviews
Japanese-born, American-trained painter Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1889-1953) moved to New York in 1910 to study art and within a decade became an important force in art circles both in New York and at the summer artists' colony in Ogunquit, Maine. The Shores of a Dream considers the paintings and drawings that Kuniyoshi produced before his first trip to Europe in 1925. Comparative examples from traditional Japanese art and by Kuniyoshi's contemporaries, including Charles Demuth, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Marsden Hartley, suggest how he fused both traditional and modernist artistic principles into a style uniquely his own.
