This book is written primarily for beginners. It is chiefly written for those who have never yet visited the winter Alps, and who are utterly ignorant of all matters of outfit and expenditure. To these I would say make up your mind that you are sure to ski. Before you leave England you may perhaps fancy that you are going to skate or toboggan. You may believe that ski-ing is a vastly dangerous sport fitted to the young and adventurous. Possibly you may add that skating is possible in England, which seems to some a reason for neglecting everything else in the Alps. I have never been able to understand this position unless it is equivalent to saying that the skater has more Opportunity of displaying his prowess in England than the ski-runner, and therefore.
