Synopsis
In both versions of Sladek, Horvath deals with the problem of nationalist secret societies in the Weimar Republic. In Italian Night he stages the conflicts between Social Democrats and fascists in a Bavarian town. This edition provides an accurate reconstruction of the historical origins and carefully verified end versions based on the original typed manuscript or first printing.

Mit dem vorliegenden Band werden zwei Stucke Horvaths neu ediert, die den Beginn seiner Prasenz im Berliner Theaterbetrieb markieren und die deutlich politisch Stellung beziehen. In den beiden Fassungen von Sladek, Sladek oder: Die schwarze Armee und Sladek, der schwarze Reichswehrmann, behandelt Horvath die Problematik der nationalistischen Geheimbunde in der Weimarer Republik. Mit Italienische Nacht und seiner Vorstufe Ein Wochenendspiel eroffnet er den Reigen seiner vier grossen Volksstucke, indem er Konflikte zwischen Sozialdemokraten und Faschisten in einer bayerischen Kleinstadt darstellt. Die ausserst erfolgreiche Urauffuhrung von Italienische Nacht am 20. Marz 1931 im Theater am Schiffbauerdamm legte den Grundstein fur die wenige Monate spater am Deutschen Theater stattfindende Urauffuhrung von Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald und die Verleihung des Kleist-Preises an den jungen Autor.
Der Band bietet eine genaue Rekonstruktion der Entstehungsgeschichte und anhand der Originaltyposkripte bzw. der Erstdrucke uberprufte Endfassungen. Diese werden durch kommentierende Texte in ihrer genetischen Stellung und ihren Transformationen nachvollziehbar gemacht.

Synopsis
dn von Horvth (1901-1938) is one of the most renowned writers of the 20th century. The Vienna Edition provides the critical edition of his complete works which scholars have been demanding for a long time. The edition contains all of Horvth's completed and uncompleted works together with all the author's letters and biographical documents. The secure final versions of the texts, the exact account of the process of their composition and the critical re-evaluation of many sources reveal a different view of Horvth's work, his way of working and his biography.
