Eliza Savage
, January 02, 2013
This novel is subtle and clever, and the characters well-drawn. The book takes place between 1890 and 1920 in the Chicago area and the history of how the city developed (the architecture, the industry, the farming) is an interesting minor theme. The central underlying message I took away concerns what constitutes a successful life, and how the concept of beauty (of the landscape, or of art, for ex.) gives meaning to the lives of those who are receptive to it.
