Excerpt from Springfield, Mass: Her Picturesque Beauty and Commercial Enterprise
Houses had been built, children born, and outly ing villages established, before the Indians forsook their friendly tactics for war; but in 1675, Philip, the chief of the Pokanokets, incited zoo of the Agawam Indians to join goo of his braves in an attack upon the little hamlet. They selected the time of attack when the English soldiers, who were commanded by Major John Pynchon, were at Had ley. The inhabitants took refuge in three fortified houses. The main part of the town was burned. The slaughter only included three men and one woman. This was the first local war. For the next seventy-five years there were occasional frays with the savages, but comparatively few inhabitants were killed.
