This was a great way to be introduced to the Bible -- through its stories, presented without spin or comment. There's plenty of breathing space for readers to have their own responses to the events and dialogue recorded in the Hebrew Bible and the Christian New Testament. Pearl S. Buck's great gift to the reader is to present in the clearest possible language, and to get out of the way. The two volumes of The Story Bible were my first childhood introduction to the Bible, and they gave me enough familiarity and confidence as a biblical reader that I was able to work my way through the whole thing soon thereafter, with all its lawgiving, prophetic, and epistolary parts. It's a pity that Pearl S. Buck is so far out of fashion. These books deserve a new edition.
