Synopses & Reviews
Ian Campbell Thomson worked as a young farmhand on a Stirlingshire farm after the Second World War. In a period when horses were supreme, he recalls amusing animal stories, interesting escapades, awkward moments, tentative moves into sport and music, dalliance with the fairer sex and all the problems that confront a naif country boy. As his life takes shape under the influence of the boss, Aunt Kit and various figures encountered on the way, he tries to circumvent countryside prejudices and class divisions and he strives for a foothold on the farming ladder. Humor enables him to avoid overt nostalgia as he shares his post-war years as a 'hired lad'.
