Synopsis
As the spring-loaded door opened, papers and envelopes flew out of the little compartment. A musty smell wafted from the secret compartment to the paper that was now littering the floor...In the Fall of 1961, Maryna discovers a pile of letters in her mother's bedroom dresser. The envelopes are unusual, fashioned from the kind of high-quality paper that is a rarity in their town of Rostov, in the Soviet Union. All are addressed to "Gregory", a man her mother has told them is an uncle, but who Maryna and her younger sister Nina have never met.
Twenty years earlier, Maryna's father, Vladimir, was brutally killed by the KGB. Rumors flew thick and fast around his death, but her mother always maintained his innocence. Devastated by the loss of her husband, Nadezhda refuses to talk to Maryna or Nina about that fateful night...or Uncle Gregory.
Maryna has never liked to think about her family's painful past either, but despite her best efforts, it appears to be closing in on all sides...
First the mysterious Max turns up, claiming to know that Maryna is in danger. Then, sensitive documents are delivered to her desk by an anonymous messenger. In the space of a day, Maryna discovers nobody can be trusted and there is a deadly duo who want her dead.
As the dark secrets surrounding Vladimir's death threaten to come to light, Maryna must fight to uncover the truth...and to stay alive.
