About the Author
H. Ballentine Carter, M.D., is Professor of Urology and Oncology and the Director of Adult Urology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. An internationally recognized expert in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate disease, Dr. Carter has written extensively on the diagnosis and staging of prostate cancer, pioneered the concept of PSA rate of change (PSA velocity) as a marker of prostate cancer presence, and directs the Proactive Surveillance Program for prostate cancer at Johns Hopkins—a program designed to select men who are thought to have small volume cancers. These men then have the option to be carefully monitored as an alternative to immediate surgery. Dr. Carter has had research and opinion articles published in The Journal of Urology, Urology, Cancer Research, the Journal of the American Medical Association, the New England Journal of Medicine, and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Gerald Secor Couzens is the author and coauthor of more than two dozen books about health, medical topics, and sports. He also writes about health issues for various publications, including the New York Times. Mr. Couzens was the cocreator and for the past fourteen years has served as the managing editor of The Johns Hopkins Prostate Bulletin, the popular 45-page consumer quarterly for people interested in prostate cancer and other prostate topics.
