Synopses & Reviews
With
The O'Reilly Factor and
The No Spin Zone, Bill O'Reilly proved that he's the king of the nonfiction list. With
Those Who Trespass, he extends his bestselling domain to fiction, giving readers a novel that's an exciting look into the no-holds-barred world of TV journalism.
One by one, high-level executives and correspondents in the brutally competitive world of TV journalism are being murdered. Soon it becomes clear that the killings are linked, the work of a bitter former newsman exacting revenge on those who derailed his career. First to be suspected is Shannon Michaels, a once-promising correspondent whose hopes for a TV news career were dashed when he violated the rules of the game. Also under investigation is jaded, hard-drinking David Wayne, another journalist whose career has been destroyed by the personal betrayals and corporate machinations of the TV news world. Tommy O'Malley, a tough but warmhearted New York City detective, is assigned to crack the widening, high-profile murder cases but encounters competition from a beautiful and tenacious tabloid reporter, Ashley Van Buren. As the story unfolds, Tommy and Ashley quickly discover they've got much more in common than a knack for solving crimes.
Suspense, action, psychodrama, and romance all unfold as the two try to catch their man. Along the way, readers are transported to numerous, sometimes exotic, locales, from Argentina to Fort Lauderdale, from Ireland to Long Island. They also gain fascinating, authentic glimpses of the TV news business they rely on daily, but have only seen from the outside until now.
Review
"[A] formula debut by Fox newsman O'Reilly....The stage is set for a smorgasbord of cliches...none of it, thanks to O'Reilly's wooden writing and lack of originality, surprising or believable for a minute." Kirkus Reviews
Review
"The plot is simplistic and the characters veer toward stereotype (the Irish rogue, the crafty newsmen, the doughnut-eating cop), but the novel engages despite its flaws." Publishers Weekly
Review
"Although stereotypical secondary characters are a drawback, the novel is nicely paced, and the network milieu works well as a setting for murder." Mary Frances Wilkens, Booklist
Review
"Want to know how knives are sharpened and competitors sabotaged inside those outwardly urbane TV newsrooms? O'Reilly knows it all, and tells you. Electrifying stuff." Arthur Haley, author of Airport, Hotel, and Detective
Review
"As real and exciting as the streets of New York City. A mystery thriller that only one of New York's finest could solve." William Bratton, former NYC Police Commissioner
Review
"A speed-read thriller that unmasks the cutthroat world of television news. So real you'll forget it's fiction." Vincent Bugliosi, author of Outrage and Helter Skelter
Review
"O'Reilly knows his cop killers and his canny female reporters...and weaves a harrowing tale of revenge and murder. A chilling dissection of the world of network news that has me locking my office door!" Catherine Crier, hostess of Fox News Channel's "The Crier Report"
Review
"Yes, no thriller would be complete without sex, and the inimitable quality of O'Reilly's erotic prose in Those Who Trespass has been extensively documented on Salon and elsewhere. Still, it's worth noting a few things about O'Reilly's writing. Kirkus Reviews calls the language 'wooden'; one could stick to the simpler adjective 'bad'....At times, though, the author does hit on some insider-ish insights....But even the insider dope occasionally seems problematic."
