In this novel, I found it easy to relate to the lead character right away because her attitude toward life is full of common sense. The cigarette girl, Linda Avery, faces many challenges, but always seems to be willing to learn and adapt to the current circumstance. The other characters that Riegel describes seem uncannily familiar, as if I have met them before or would possibly see them roaming the streets of my city. The wording was sometimes as crude as the settings and people, but that added texture. This was an unusual and interesting novel; sometimes I felt that Riegel went off on a tangent, but I have to admit his tangents at least are entertaining. I would consider reading another novel by this author, depending on the description. I'm giving it five out of five stars for the author's moxie and because the book was an out-of-the-ordinary read.
