Excerpt from Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Vol. 58: Instituted 1852
Measured along the channel of the Mississippi, the distance to the head of the Atchafalaya from the Gulf of Mexico is some 315 miles. F ollowing down the latter stream, it is found that it reaches the Gulf in a distance of about 156 miles, at a point 125 miles west of the mouth of the Mississippi. It practically reaches tide water at Grand Lake, a distance of only about 100 miles from its source. (see Plate I.)
