Synopses & Reviews
A Treatise of the System of the World provided the first English translation of any part of Isaac Newton's 1687 publication,
Principia Mathematica, widely regarded as the greatest work in the history of science. In this book, Newton integrated Kepler's laws of planetary motion and Galileo's forays into the laws of gravity into a comprehensive understanding of the organization of the universe according to the law of universal gravitation. Suitable for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, this translation from the original Latin text was published in 1731 as the second edition. It is the edition preferred by modern scholars, as explained in the Introduction by I. Bernard Cohen, one of the world's foremost authorities on Newton.
