This textbook is designed to be used in either an introductory orsecond course in addiction studies. It is divided into 14 chapters, the first being an overview. Chapters 2 through 6 each have to dowith a particular addictive substance, i.e., alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, methamphetamine and prescription drugs. Each chapter from7 to 13 deals with a particular process (behavioral) addiction, i.e., gambling, sex, eating, work, exercise, shopping, or theinternet. The final chapter considers the future of addiction treatment and related issues. The set-up for each chapter is a listof intended learning outcomes followed by a case and case discussion and then an overview of the addiction. Each topic includes a list ofdefinitions, sections on assessment, diagnosis and treatment settings, and conclusions.
