Synopses & Reviews
Each year, the Museum of the American Quilter's Society (MAQS) challenges and inspires quilters with an international contest to encourage the development of innovative quilts from a traditional pattern. The intriguing Tumbling Block is the 2002 theme.
Inspiration for your next Tumbling Block quilt begins when you see the 18 quilts from contest winners and finalists. Full-page color photos of each quilt are accompanied by an introduction to the artist, including a photo, and the artist's description of her quilt and her work. Selected design tips, techniques, and patterns are also provided.
The Tumbling Block pattern is well documented from the 1800s, but its 3-D effects can make it look spectacularly modern. Also known as Baby Blocks, the one-patch design consists of one shape, the 60 degrees diamond. If a light, a medium, and a dark-colored diamond are sewn together, a three-sided cube results. A series of these cubes sewn together creates three-dimensional stacked boxes, or are they hanging from the ceiling? This fool-the-eye pattern is exciting enough to challenge traditional and experimental quiltmakers alike.
