This is one of those books that I checked out from my school library multiple times. Then it went out of print and was a vague memory -- almost a dream. Did it really exist? I cheered when it [briefly] came back into print in 2001. Twig is a young girl living in a tenement house. Her life seems somewhat circumscribed and bordering on dismal, yet she has a big heart and bigger imagination. One day she descends to her backyard and has a day full of magical adventures. "Twig" deserves to be a children's classic, yet few people know it and it is once again out of print. If you know a girl in early elementary school who loves fairies (and fairies are big business these days, with no limit to pink, sparkly merchandise) do her a favor and buy this quiet little book. It's a gem!

I first read my mother's old copy of this book when I was in elementary school. It's the most wonderful fantasy story about a self confidant little girl with the greatest imagination who draws you into the world she inhabits in her own backyard...I loved this book as a kid and I love it now...as a kid I felt I also could relate, since I liked to make up adventures while playing outside. Twig was an inspiration for that kind of play!
