Peter Diamond, head of the murder squad in Bath, has high blood pressure and low spirits, neither of which are improved by two mysterious deaths in his district. An unidentified woman has jumped from the roof of a local landmark, and an elderly farmer has killed himself with a shotgun. Open and shut suicides? Not to the keen eye of this large detective.

When one of those strays -- an amnesiac whom Ada calls Rose -- is adopted by a too good to be true "sister", Ada insists that she's in trouble.
Diamond is reluctant to investigate; reluctant, that is, until it appears that "Rose" has some sort of connection to the murders he's investigating. Diamond must figure out the connection and find a killer, all upon a dark night....
