What is elk country?
For sure, its the stuff of magazine coversthe jagged crags and hanging valleys that run down the Rockies from British Columbia clear to Mexico. It is the beasts themselves: elk, goats, grizzlies, bighorns, pronghorns. But its also big trees and little shafts of light; quiet moments when a great gray owl alights on a nearby snag; good friends stepping out of the lodgepoles at twilight, heading for camp. Elk country is all about the kinds of things you begin to see when you wander deep, long, and often within it.
And that is what Lance Schelvan has done for the past forty years. Luckily for us, he always took his Nikons along for the ride. The images he captured for Visions of Elk Country are fond, backward glances across four decades and thousands of miles of elk country. But they are in equal measure hopeful visions of what the future may hold for these wild places and the wildlife within.
