In 2001, its centenary year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to the United Nations and to its Secretary-General Kofi A. Annan. Annan has devoted more than 30 years of his life to the U.N. He has clearly underlined the U.N.'s traditional responsibility for peace and security and has also emphasized its obligations with regard to human rights; HIV/AIDS; international terrorism.
