Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. "West with the Night" is a dreamily beautiful account of aviator Beryl Markham's life in Kenya. She raised horses, then began training them when she was only eighteen; she later turned to flying, and flew the mail route, as well as transporting sick or injured men, and flying search missions. Her accounts are so simple, yet so poetic, it is easy to believe that you are there with her, seeing what she sees, with Markham placing a hand on your arm to point out something you may have missed. It's an essential for anyone who loves armchair travel - and poetry in prose.
