Synopsis
Excerpt from Yesterday and Today in Arkansas
Ast from the Valley of the Mississippi and north from its delta, the land formation of today is what was once an extensive inland sea or ocean arm. The first rock formation discovered by early day river navigators was on the Arkansas River where the capital city of Arkansas now stands. In the picture above the small rock at the foot of one of the four great bridges that span the river here, was known by its French name, Petit Roche, socalled to distinguish it from Grand Rochelle, or Big Rock, now occupied by Fort Roots.
