About the Author

John DeCicco is a Senior Associate and the Transportation Program Director for ACEEE. A leading expert on transportation energy use and emissions, he conducts research on automotive technologies and has published extensively, writing for both popular and technical audiences. With a long-standing interest in developing marketing-oriented approaches and better consumer information on environmental issues, he pioneered ACEEE's Green Book in order to provide such information for the automotive marketplace. He is also coeditor of the book Transportation, Energy, and Environment: How Far Can Technology Take Us? and the study Energy Innovations: A Prosperous Path to a Clean Environment. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Princeton University in 1988, where he was affiliated with the University's Center for Energy and Environmental Studies.

Jim Kliesch is a Research Assistant at ACEEE, where his responsibilites include research and analysis of transportation and energy-related topics. His work ranges in scope from conducting CO2 emissions trend analyses to the development of software tools for vehicle lifecycle assessment. With a background in electrical engineering, he has a keen interest in issues at the nexus of technology, energy, and the environment. Jim earned his M.S. in Envrionmental and Energy Policy from the University of Delaware.

Martin Thomas is a consultant to ACEEE, following his work as a Research Assistant where he helped ACEEE launch the original edition of the Green Book and contributed to other analyses of transportation issues. Prior to that he worked as a research assistant in the analysis of vehicle emissions at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the University of Michigan. He holds an M.S. in physics from the University of Michigan. He drives a zero-emission 12-speed bicycle.
