Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Although there are over one billion Muslims in the world, and over ten million in the West, most discussions of Islam are based on clichés or outright prejudice. This lively and compelling book sets out to bridge the gulf of misunderstanding. Islam, argues Akbar Ahmed, does not mean the subordination of women, contempt for other religions, opposition to the modern world, or barbaric punishments for petty crimes. One cannot fully come to terms with modern Islam without understanding its sources and traditions.

Synopsis:

Aiming to bridge gulfs of misunderstanding of the Muslim world, the author of this guide to Islam argues that outsiders can understand the realities of Islamic tradition only through an awareness of its sources. The book starts with the life of Muhammad and the Qur'an's five pillars.

Description:

Includes bibliographical references (p. [241]-243) and index.

About the Author

Akbars Ahmed is fellow of Selwyn College, Cambridge, UK, and has been a visiting professor at Princeton and Harvard Universities.

The book is magnificent interms of creating understanding and building a bridge between the two main actors of todays world, i.e Islam and West. the contents of book mainly revolve around cultural and artistic developments and less space is given to other areas of the great muslim empires. regarding the issue of a bank the auther doesn't provide basic information of the real issu to the reader. the cold response of the Arab world to the notorious book of salman rashdi is described by the author that they are orthodox and brelvi sub sect of sunni islam was mainly active. this argument seems to be a bit misleading due to the fact that Brelvis are in minority and vast mejority of south Asians are inclined towards Deobandi school of thought who hold similar ideas as that of Arabs. the reality according to me, is that Arab society by and large is not familier with the idea of processions on roads and chanting slogans and this was the main reason infact Arabs are the muslims who still by and large retain the idea of a pure Islam.
