Iceland (American Literature)

by Jim Krusoe

Iceland (American Literature) Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Iceland follows the absurd adventures of its narrator, Paul, from making love to a woman named Emily whom he meets by a swimming pool filled with floating internal organs, to falling into an underground river in a volcano in Iceland, to sitting in a piano bar for six years crying over the lyrics to "The Banana Boat Song." Driven by Paul's obsession to be reunited with Emily, the plot leaps hilariously through time, coincidence, and disjointed logic, with only the narrator's ludicrous perspective to hold it on course. Reminiscent of Raymond Roussel and Harry Mathews, Krusoe has combined an eccentric character and an outlandish plot to create an unforgettable book.

Synopsis:

An eccentric and unforgettable novel from the author of 'Blood Lake'.

Eirik the Red, August 1, 2006 (view all comments by Eirik the Red)
This book reads like an acid trip, and the initial temptation is to believe that it's going to be just as pointless once you come down. But Krusoe's numberous diversions, which involve diving in a pool full of human organs (not as gross as it sounds), a volcano, and a forgetful carpet cleaner, ultimately lead back to the place they started, conveying the impression of an entire life lived. The effect is capped off by the final scene, which takes place in a cemetary precariously perched on a clifftop overlooking the ocean, and which is at once absurdly comic and strikingly poignant. Though patience-trying at times, this novel is one which will remain with the reader for months afterward.
