Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This intimate pocket-sized guide to the City of Roses features quirky eccentricities known only to locals, such as weather machine in Pioneer Courthouse Square, the International Rose Test Garden, and the only three-door elevator west of the Mississippi. Also included are details about a bookstore that occupies an entire city block, bus routes, and sites for science fiction aficionados.

Book News Annotation:

With topics ranging from aboriginal tribes to yurts for camping, a Canadian travel writer offers an off-the-beaten track guide to the Rose City area. But some sites (e.g. Mount St. Helens) are hardly secrets. Distributed in the US by Independent Publisher's Group.

Shh... the Fareless Square, Powell's City of Books, the Willamette river, Oregon's medical marijuana law, and our lack of sales tax are all close-guarded Portland secrets. Also, Portlanders are apparently a stubborn, bearded people, with an affinity for fluffernutter, "biffys," and yurts. This is an unbelievably stupid book. There is nothing 'secret' about anything in it, it's surprisingly out-of-date for being only four years old, and the author has perhaps never been to Portland.
