Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

An irresistible Southern charmer about small-town gossip, second-chance romance, strange weather, and ballroom dancing in the most unlikely places.

Laurie Lepanto is on the horns of a dilemma. Her favorite market, the Piggly Wiggly, of Second Creek, Mississippi, is on the verge of closing its doors, nearly done in by a new Mega-Mart across town. Over the years, the Piggly Wiggly has been more than a supermarket-it's been a community center and town hall, and it's even seen a little romance blossom in its aisles.

Laurie-who has never met a problem she can't solve- is determined to help Mr. Choppy, the Piggly Wiggly's manager, keep his business afloat. She enlists her fellow "Nitwitts," a formidable array of the town's most influential widows, and the town's most eligible silver fox, Powell Hampton, a sixtysomething widower and former ballroom dance instructor. For two hours a week, Powell will waltz-or fox-trot or tango-at the Piggly Wiggly with Second Creek's ladies while the salesclerks do their shopping for them.

In a place like Second Creek, where everyone knows everyone, waltzing at the Piggly Wiggly soon becomes the town's most festive event. And after a few turns around the floor with the handsome and charming Powell, Laurie soon begins to make plans for romance as well as civic renewal.

Review:

"Dalby's darling debut is a light jaunt around the fairy tale-like town of Second Creek, Miss., where the weather is 'God's messenger service,' people waltz in the aisles of a grocery store and the Annual Delta Floozie Contest packs the town square. Laurie Lepanto puts together, with the help of the Bloody Mary-swilling Nitwitts (the civic association she belongs to, comprised of wealthy widows), 'another mildly amusing Second Creek solution to life' to save the local Piggly Wiggly from closing after a MegaMart opens nearby. Laurie arranges a 'Waltzing at the Piggly Wiggly' promotion that allows ladies to cut a rug with dashing local ballroom dancer Powell Hampton, while the store's bag boys shop for the ladies' groceries. As big-band music swings in the canned goods aisle, a romance between Laurie and Powell percolates. Second Creek is populated by the charming types one would expect: Mr. Choppy, owner of the Piggly Wiggly, is a sweet Southerner with a deep drawl and a mysterious missing finger; each of the Nitwitts are tart-sweet busybodies; and Mr. Floyce, the songwriting and joke-telling mayor, has a hidden past. Those who appreciate genteel charm should enjoy this fluffy confection." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Review:

"This gently told tale is filled with delightfully peculiar characters, and readers will greatly enjoy their antics and the superbly conceived universe of Second Creek." Booklist

This is one of the sweetest books I've read in years. Not a literary masterpiece, but a funny, charming and heartfelt glimpse of small-town life that reminds me, once again, why I'm so proud to be Southern. I just wish there was a Piggly Wiggly in my town for me to waltz in the aisles.

This humorous contemporary fiction novel takes place in the small-town, eccentric South and details the antics of a group of wealthy widows--the Nitwitts--who try to save the local Piggly Wiggly from closing down by convincing a retired ballroom dance instructor to waltz with the female customers while the bagboys round up their groceries.

But there's more. Mr. Choppy, the bachelor store owner, has a mysterious romantic past which is gradually revealed as a result of the publicity the 'Waltzing At The Piggly Wiggly' campaign generates.
Old loves, new loves, reclaimed loves--this is a Pandora's box of humor and pathos full of surprises. Whether you like dancing or not, it'll keep you on your toes!
