Eleni
by Nicholas Gage
"(This) is a remarkably successful work of 'faction,' that marriage of fact and fiction literary purists are always trying to put asunder. Mr. Gage uses fictional techniques inventing dialogue, thoughts, and feelings to bring out the full truth of this book's terrible and novel facts. The bulk of Eleni is a novelistic re-creation of his mother's experience during nine hard years. This narrative surface is broken only very occasionally by passages recording Mr. Gage's memories of specific events, and by introductions to the many chapters which fill in the larger historical and political picture. Some readers may distrust Mr. Gage's fictional touches, but I found they enhanced my sense that this was a true story....I can think of no higher praise of this book than to say that it is fit to stand as a monument to Eleni Gatzoyiannis." Blood Meridian: Or the Evening Redness in the West
by Cormac McCarthy
According to Steve, to get an idea of Cormac McCarthy's "stylish look at the violence of the Old West," imagine dropping "Moby-Dick, Heart of Darkness, and a handful of cowboys into a blender." We might put it another way: Imagine William Faulkner leaving sultry Mississipi for the primeval landscapes of the savage West ? and forgetting his meds. Even so, "Blood Meridian" is without question one of the great works of fiction of the past quarter century.

Safe Area Gorazde: The War in Eastern Bosnia 1992-1995
by Joe Sacco
The most dramatic phase of the war in Afghanitstan may be over, but the war itself is not. According to Gretchen, though the action is thousands of miles away, we ought to remain aware of war's consequences: "Whether in Bosnia or Afghanistan, the illustrations in Joe Sacco's Safe Area Gorazde show us the ravages of war in a way that reading 1000 books on the subject can't." Red Mars (Mars Trilogy)
by Kim Stanley Robinson
"Red Mars is one of those rare moments when a science fiction and a mainstream novel meet and coincide, without either one losing its gratification: you can read it either way. It is Robinson's most ambitious work by far, in which all his varied literary and descriptive gifts finally come together: collective delirium and personal lyric experience, the epic of sport and physical exhertion, the language and exotic landscape, a vivid characterization of memorable individuals ? all this now struck and illuminated by history, by a lightening bolt." All Souls: A Family Story from Southie
by Michael P Macdonald
"I am thousands of miles from my hometown in Massachusetts (and light-years from South Boston, the terrain of this book), yet All Souls gave me an odd feeling. It made me homesick for all things American. Yet it also reminded me to feel grateful to be far, far away. A great book." Randy (read more)

Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady
by Florence King
"Stylistically the book employs a winning combination of the best in soap opera melodrama and the hot-timing, ding-dong dialogue usually found in Abbott and Costello movies. All this plus a sense of syntax strong enough to make Dr Johnson look like a beginner....I've never read so many perfect one-liners ('Like charity, schizophrenia begins at home') and it's a long time since I've laughed out loud through nearly 300 pages....This book is dynamite, don't miss it." Art and Lies
by Jeanette Winterson
"As Winterson spins the intriguing, dramatic, and significant tales of each of her characters, she satisfies our craving for story but accomplishes so much more, articulating the meaning of time, art, passion, and hypocrisy in prose charged with the pulse and imagery of poetry." Sophie's Choice
by William Styron
"No reader of Sophie's Choice can doubt that Styron has put immense energy into trying to understand and deal justly with the evils in American history and the European holocaust, to say nothing of the evil (as well as the good) in his characters....Scene after scene comes back now, long after I last read the book, with astonishing vividness ? perhaps the most obvious mark of a masterpiece." The Best-Loved Poems of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis

"I have never been one to fawn over the Kennedys. But I do love poetry, and so received this book as a gift. I must say, it is a lively, thoughtful selection, and gave me new appreciation for the warmth and depth of this remarkable woman, and for the care she put into raising her children. I've since given it as a gift myself." Jerri (read more)

Radiance
"Radiance is an ingenious and at times a brilliant novel....Scholz may remind readers of Thomas Pynchon at some moments and J.G. Ballard at others....If the plot of Radiance is a tangled knot of deception, self-deception and conspiracy leading only to exhaustion and despair, it's Scholz's extraordinary language ? his ear for befuddled dialogue and scientific obfuscation, his resonant, haunted landscapes ? that crack the book open and allow its light to blaze forth." West with the Night
by Beryl Markham
"I knew [Beryl Markham] fairly well in Africa and never would have suspected that she could and would put pen to paper except to write in her flyer's log book. As it is, she has written so well, and marvelously well, that I was completely ashamed of myself as a writer....I wish you would get it and read it because it is really a bloody wonderful book."
