The Man Who Ate Everything
by Jeffrey Steingarten
Mary's comment:
"Is it too mean to say that Jeffrey Steingarten is too good for Vogue? Although I haven't picked up the magazine in a good 15 years, I'd be inclined to subscribe just to read about his adventures in food. Definitely obsessive, somewhat misanthropic, Steingarten knows these things about himself and so his quirks are much easier to take. His sense of humor makes it all go down easily. Fun and informative. A great read for anyone who likes food eating or cooking and good writing. Not recommended for anyone likely to challenge Steingarten and embark on recreating all his meals."

Child of My Heart
by Alice McDermott
"This specific, full world, along with McDermott's stringent modesty and moral rigor, allows her to ponder deep contemporary and eternal questions (in her hands they seem to be the same ones) without fuss or bombast.... McDermott displays a vibrant romantic hope exactly matched by a realist's awareness of daily devastation." Mona Simpson, Atlantic Monthly (read more)

Experience: A Memoir (Vintage International)
by Martin Amis
Brent's comments:
"Not only is Martin Amis the son of a famous writer Kingsley Amis, but he is a great wordsmith in his own right. Experience is a glimpse into the life of what it might have been like to grow up amongst the literati of the 50s and 60s. Amis is not a habitual namedropper, but it happens of necessity in this autobiographical tome. I have a deeper appreciation for Martin Amis's work now that I've read this book. I should have read it immediately upon its release, but I'm glad I found it and it has opened up a whole new world to me in understanding one of my favorite writers. I hope others pick it up and enjoy it as much as I." (read more)

The Patron Saint of Liars
by Ann Patchett
"Ann Patchett has written such a good first novel that among the many pleasures it offers is the anticipation of how wonderful her second, third, and fourth will surely be....It is a world that Ms. Patchett draws with wit and imagination....It is about pilgrimage and healing. A made-up story of an enchanted place. A fairy tale. A delight." Alice McDermott, New York Times Book Review (read more)

A Country Year: Living the Questions
by Sue Hubbell
Lisa's comments:
"Society has become detached from natural inhabitants around us. Exterminators create a barrier between humans and other creatures. Here the author lives among the spiders, bees, and snakes that make the rest quiver. Read Hubbell's A Country Year and learn the way nature is integrated around us."

Confederacy of Silence
by Richard Rubin
"This a very fine book, one of the best I've ever read about my home state ? clear-eyed and unsentimental and at the same time compassionate and loving. The authenticity of the voice and the first-hand grasp of the material are impressive. Besides that, it is beautifully written, and it tells a gripping story, with superbly drawn characters, in the way of good novels. I couldn't put it down." In Our Image : America's Empire in the Philippines (90 Edition)
by Stanley Karnow
"[Mr. Karnow] has written a readable political and social history....Good as the book is as history, however, it is somewhat disappointing as a marker for the future of United States-Philippine interactions....Nevertheless, there is no other book even approaching Mr. Karnow's either in recounting with sensitivity and accuracy the long history of the Philippines or in leaving readers enormously satisfied with the tale." Salvation on Sand Mountain: Snake-Handling and Redemption in Southern Appalachia
by Dennis Covington
Crystal's comment:
"I read this gripping tale as part of a Religion in America course, but six years after graduating, keep coming back to it year after year. Covington seeks to explore the practice of snake handling in rural Appalachia, after a man is charged with murdering his wife with snakes used for religious salvation. Covington gets more and more deeply involved with the people of this faith, and finds himself spellbound by their practices. An absolutely incredible book." (read more)

Susmits's comments:
"Kamila Shamsie is a young Pakistani writer who says she was inspired to write this book by the image of a spinning globe. Read it and you'll see exactly what she means. This is a great book to introduce us to the real modern-day Pakistan, for those who may think of the country simply as a haven for radical fundamentalists." (read more)
