An Invisible Sign of My Own

Vivian Michelle's Comments:

The Best Thing I Ever Tasted
The Best Thing I Ever Tasted
by Sallie Tisdale

Nathan's Comments:
"Nathan's comments:
"Wow, is this ever a refreshing look at the food we eat! The Best Thing I Ever Tasted takes us on a fascinating and in-depth journey through what has led us up to the food we consume in America today. From the invention of the microwave to the marketing of foods, find out why what we love and hate what goes in our mouths. But it's really more than that; the style of the prose is what captured my heart. Tisdale's romantic and descriptive writing deftly transported me back to my childhood days of fried bologna sandwiches and chicken chip bake so that I can understand why today I eat things like 'sauteed cherries in pinot noir with creme fraiche' and 'couscous tomato with fried caper buds.' What is the best thing YOU'VE ever tasted?"" (read more)

The Big Year: A Tale of Man, Nature, and Fowl Obsession
by Mark Obmascik

Sari Lynn's Comments:
"Sari Lynn's comments:
"A totally delightful story of three very different men, linked by a shared obsession ? to see the most different bird species in a year. Even if you're not similarly obsessed, the author's writing style and humor will catch you up and carry you along for the ride. It was such a fun read that it made me consider, if only momentarily, doing something similar. For avid birders, armchair travelers, and students of human nature ? enjoy!"" (read more)

"This is an incisive and timely book on a crucial planetary issue. I saw the movie An Inconvenient Truth while reading this book. The experiece of both was enhanced by the other. The Ruins: A Novel
by Scott Smith

Amy's Comments:
"Amy's comments:
"This book just REEKS! It's about vines, people. Vines. Deadly vines. I read this book, waiting for something more. It never came. I read the whole thing, certain that by the end I'd see what everyone else has seen in the novel. I didn't. It's inconsistent and monotonous, and too many loose ends are left. Easter Rising: An Irish American Coming Up from Under
Easter Rising: An Irish American Coming Up from Under
by Michael P Macdonald

James's Comments:
"James's comments:
"In Easter Rising, Michael Patrick MacDonald accompanies readers on a blistering journey through familial pain, healing, and self-discovery. The slew of family tragedies that prompt MacDonald to leave his native Southie take him from the abandoned warehouses that spawned Boston's hardcore punk scene to the streets of Paris, London, New York, and ultimately, to the Ireland his grandfather left half a century before....What makes this book an essential piece of American writing is the author's uncanny ability to bravely and insightfully bring to light stories that would otherwise be whispered in quiet corners. In this regard, MacDonald's prose makes cowards of us all."" (read more)

Christy's Comments:
"Christy's comments:
"I couldn't put the book down once I started reading. I hadn't realized that so many of the characters and events in To Kill a Mockingbird were based on her life in Monroeville, Alabama. Until I saw the movie Capote I did not know about Lee's relationship with Capote, so reading more about their investigation of the Kansas murders was especially interesting....I wonder if there will be writings that will be discovered later -- when she will not have to hear any comparisons with her beloved first book."" by Katherine Dunn

Melissa's Comments:
"Melissa's comments:
"I hesitantly agreed to read this book on the recommendation of a friend. I couldn't see how the story of a carnival family who seeds their own show by purposely creating mutant offspring could be instructive in any way. Halfway through, I found myself empathizing with the loyal-to-a-fault narrator, a bald, albino hunchback who is devoted to her limbless, partially aquatic egalomaniac brother. Their siblings, musically talented Siamese twins, and a clairvoyant younger brother, have similarly twisted relationships with their brother Arty. The story is wild and enchanting, but it is how it makes you think about 'normal' life that is most amazing."" (read more)

"I quite enjoyed Ryan Knighton's cockeyed account of his evolution into a man of blindness. You will laugh with guilty pleasure and relief as he he recounts cringe-worthy moments of painful slapstick — and you will want to weep as he shares moments of raw pain and vulnerability. He isn't pitiful or noble but he is very honest as he taps his way through his teens (drivers ed!), adulthood (relationships! summer camp!), Korea, and IKEA. The God Delusion
The God Delusion
by Richard Dawkins

David's Comments:
"David's comments:
"Richard Dawkins has set for himself what seems an impossible goal: to enlighten those who choose darkness and fear. I have great hope that this book will succeed, but I fear that it won't. I have read the book and am looking forward to meeting Dawkins on the 27th, but as I gaze at the reviews written on Amazon I find that his wisdom is falling on deaf ears. For example, I saw reviews of the book saying Dawkins didn't touch the idea that bouys the ID people, 'irreducible complexity.' Dawkins not only deals with this religious bogyman, he does it with great care and completeness. The other big criticism I have seen is that the book is filled with hatred and anger. This is not the case. Read it for yourself. If you are of a theist faith, then perhaps you will learn that things aren't as certain as you think they are, however, if you are an a-theist then you are sure to find an intellectual companion to help you thru these years of darkness. This book is well written and very informative, don't pass it up because your faith makes you fear."" (read more)

Victory At Sea

Bill's Comments:
"Bill's comments:
"My father was a Lt. Commander in the Navy, commanded a minsweeper fleet in the Pacific ? very tough duty. In 1952, 3 and 4, every Sunday we turned on the TV at 4PM and watched Victory at Sea on NBC. It won the Best Documentary in 1952, and I have yet to see its match. 'Gripping' is a totally inadequate word to describe this series. The US fought on three continents, two oceans and numerous islands, and won against multiple opponents starting from behind. To watch this unforld is simply the most dramatic work ever, fiction or documentary. Outnumbered and outgunned, we fought back with heroics, incredibly fast technology advances and most important, the most effective production systems in the world. Boeing built 10,000 B-17's in four years, the P-51 was developed in 9 months and fighting 12 months after it was approved. The whole country was committed to support. We'll never see the like again. You owe this to yourself and your children for a viseral sense of what our nation can rise to. This really is a Ten Star production. I have seen no other in 50 years that comes close."" (read more)

"This is by far the worst book I've read all year. It's incoherent, stupid, and ugly. D.B.C. ('dirty but clean' wtf?) Pierre no doubt thinks he's being very edgy and topical by dealing with school shootings, underage lust, and the media circus. His supposedly satiric version of America (he's Australian) is so grotesque and ludicrously overwrought as to be unrecognizable....Though supposedly comic, it's about as funny as a pencil stabbed into your ankle and broken off....This is not me being provincial; there is much about our culture that is ripe for satire, but not by somebody who knows nothing about it."" My husband, a former English prof, had never read it, and couldn't believe he was hearing me chuckle and laugh through the whole book. (It was delightful to hear him do the same when I gave it to him to read when I was finished.) I wanted more Richard Bradford, and was disappointed to discover that he wrote only one other novel, and also that he passed away in 2002.
