Mao II
by Don DeLillo
Nick's Comments:
"Nick's comments:
"Throughout the last year, I have been slowly making my way through Don DeLillo's large catalog of novels. Although White Noise has been marked as Don DeLillo's masterpiece, I believe Mao II comes in a close second as DeLillo's best work. The novel is compact, but full of ideas and questions regarding love, authorship and terrorism. Written nearly 15 years ago, Mao II remains frighteningly relevant to today's world."" (read more)

The Rule of Four
by Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason
Erin's Comments:
"Erin's comments:
"I wasn't expecting much from this book, I must admit. A novel about a book as elusive as the Hynerotomachia? Even as a bibliophile, I wasn't very excited, and I picked it up randomly for an easy read between classics. But I was absolutely blown away by this book. I practically fell in love with one of the characters, and even came to adore the Roman author of the Hypnerotomachia. But more importantly, I was enamored in what the Hypnerotomachia was hiding, and often couldn't bring myself to put the book down for the night. I not only cried at the end, I bawled like a baby. This is an exquisite first novel, and, though it might be a longshot, I hope Caldwell and Thomason write at least one more book."" (read more)

The Dog Who Cried Wolf
by Keiko Kasza
Lorrie Willbergh 's Comments:
"Lorrie Willbergh's comments:
"The best book I read this year! It is about a dog who reads a book about wolves! He runs away to be a wolf! He chased a rabbit! He got sprayed by a skunk. He howled at the moon 'haoooooooooooooooooo!' but then he saw a real wolf then he ran home. You should never run away from home! The dog missed his family and he learned it's better to be yourself! I liked the pictures! Then the dog and the girl read a book about monkeys, I can't wait for the next book! My name is Anthony I am in 2nd grade. My mom helped me post this message."" (read more)

Any Place I Hang My Hat
by Susan Isaacs
Barbara's Comments:
"Barbara's comments:
"Susan Isaacs tells the story of an intelligent political writer who can't move on with her life until she resolves the fundamental issue of why her mother left her as a baby. Raised by well-meaning relatives who were nothing like her, Amy uses her skills in journalism to find out everything she can about her mother, why her mother left her and ultimately finds a fundamental truth about herself and her own nature in the process. An excellent treatment of the question, 'Who am I?'"" (read more)

I had never heard of the book or Kim Barnes and as a typical college student was not in the mood for more than the required reading, but I gave this book a chance. By a Lady: Being the Adventures of an Enlightened American in Jane Austen's England
by Amanda Elyot
Cathy's Comments:
"Cathy's comments:
"New York actress C. J. Welles, Jane Austen lover, wins her dream role ? portraying her idol Jane Austen. As she exits the stage, murmuring the line 'I'm going to Bath,' she finds herself in darkness, and emerges into...Bath! As in Bath, England, year 1801. C. J. is initially delighted, but hunger and the realization that she may never get back to modern day New York quickly lessen the charm of her unexpected trip back in time. Jane Austen 'purists' be forewarned ? there are sex scenes! (The title of chapter 15 is 'Wherein our heroine experiences the pleasures of the Tantra') Time and Again meets chick lit meets Jane Austen. A quite enjoyable read."" (read more)

A Cat Named Darwin: Embracing the Bond Between Man and Pet

"The emotional impact this book had on me cannot be overstated. If you have ever been looked at funny because you talk about your dogs like they are your kids or because you have 'too many' cats, this is the book for you. By pure chance, I found this book in the New Books section of the college Library. It intrigued me enough to check it out and the next thing I know....Post-Modernism and Deconstruction are exactly like comics. Holy smokes! I recommended it to my professor for next year's seminar. The Birth House
by Ami McKay
Kara's Comments:
"Kara's comments:
"[A] spellbinding novel of a young girl who becomes a traditional midwife in rural Nova Scotia in the early 1900's. Through the story Dora Rare grows in maturity, experience, and commitment to support women with their fertility, pregnancies, and homebirths....In addition to homebirth midwifery, women's issues are woven throughout the story illuminating the struggles of that era, including women's suffrage, arranged marriages, the diagnosis of hysteria (for any women who didn't behave in a way considered proper), and the origin of vibrators to treat hysteria. The novel is written as a 'literary scrapbook' interspersing the story with journal entries by Dora Rare, and old advertisements and newspaper articles about the war, women's health, and social events."" "Get ready for a wild romp of a read through some of the world's most famous and not-so-famous eating establishments. The brightest stars in the culinary universe offer keen insight into the restaurant business while serving up some delicious tales of their less than brightest ideas in and out of the kitchen. A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian
by Marina Lewycka
Kat's Comments:
"Katrina's comments:
"A recent houseguest left a copy of this book upon his departure, and because I tend to judge books by their covers (not to mention their titles), I hesitated to give it a shot. Luckily, I had nothing else to read and I picked it up anyway. I only had to read a few pages to realize that I was in for a treat. The story of a Ukrainian widower who takes up with a scheming younger woman, despite his squabbling daughters' warnings and protests, is interspersed with yes, a short history of tractors (no, not in Ukrainian). Lewycka elicits compassion for even the minor characters without falling victim to sentimentality in what ends up being a genuinely funny novel an impressive feat considering the inauspicious title."" "Thomas's comments:
"This book shows us how dates are arrived at using the scientific method. Not just radiocarbon dating and tree ring chronology, but also written historical records are used, as demonstrated in the author's discussion of when the legend of King Arthur appeared. The best parts of the book, in my opinion, were the sections where the author explained processes for refining date estimates."" (read more)

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius
by Dave Eggers
Daniel's Comments:
"Daniel's comments:
"Eggers not only writes his story while maintaining the master narrative, he also writes down his thoughts, their patterns and cycles that seem somewhat oddly familar. His combination of honesty, humour and insecurities make this book a compelling read and yet at the same time he somehow manages to raise more questions than awnsers! Jena's Comments:
"Jena's comments:
"Daniel Handler has a way with words. And characters. I love how, in this book, no character is ever the same from one chapter to the next....The characters are at once fantastic and real. From the Shadows: The Ultimate Insider's Story of Five Presidents and How They Won the Cold War

Paul's Comments:
"Paul's comments:
"Now that Robert Gates is President Bush's nominee for Secretary of Defense ? with a good chance of quick Senate approval ? it may be a good time to read what he has to say about US foreign policy and how the Executive Branch uses intelligence to make policy....He has something positive to say about both the Republican and Democratic Presidents, and often relates anecdotes with a healthy dose of irony. With some of those same players back in office under George W. Bush, Gates's observations and experiences are relevant and should be of interest to everyone concerned about the direction of US foreign and defense policy."" (read more)
