The Famished Road
The Famished Road
by Ben Okri

Henry's Comments:
"Henry's comments:
"It's been said that One Hundred Years of Solitude should be required reading for every human being...I would include The Famished Road on the list as well. What Ben Okri achieves in this novel is simply astonishing....The Famished Road is truly a glorious work of literary art, focused intently on a small central cast of vividly imagined and indelibly created characters but so broad and surprising in scope that it astounds. It is an exhilarating, fascinating and delightful experience to read this book. What more could be asked of any novel?"" (read more)

The Diary of Anais Nin, Volume 1, 1931-1934
by Anais Nin

Leslie's Comments:
"Leslie's comments:
"Pour a glass of wine and find a cozy reading corner ? this book is hard to put down. Nin writes in a familiar tone, yet creates intricacies of words on every page. The All-American Cookie Book
by Pam Baggett

Jennifer's Comments:
"Jennifer's comments:
"Excellent! Best cookie book I own. She gives a detailed description of where each cookie recipe came from, which is really interesting. There are a lot of photos, although not one for each cookie. Also, she's really picky about the preparation of each cookie, so the descriptions can be sort of long, but thorough....[S]he's done her research."" (read more)

Potatoes, Potatoes
Potatoes, Potatoes

Janet's Comments:
"Janet's comments:
"This book has been around for awhile, but it's extremely worth re-discovering for a generation of kids growing up with war talk all around them. Children hear about war in a distant land and form ideas about it. Do these same children form concepts about peace? This book illustrates quite clearly and simply the futility and idiocy of war. Family life and plenty of potatoes to eat are equated with peace....The happy ending encourages hope for a world without war, without walls, without opposing armies, and with plenty of potatoes for all."" A Smile in the Mind
A Smile in the Mind
by Beryl McAlhone and David Stuart

Gary's Comments:
"Gary's comments:
"As a graphic designer, every time I flip through it I find something new. It's one of the few design books that entertains ? literally making you smile ? and it does something few other design books do: it challenges you to think about humor, and the craft of graphic design, in new ways (there's a visual challenge on page 25 that will drive you nuts, but do it before you read the text)....No matter what language you speak, the full color illustrations translate the visuals into smiles, and may even make you think 'Wow! I wish I'd done that!'"" (read more)

The Stupidest Angel: A Heartwarming Tale of Christmas Terror, Version 2.0
by Christopher Moore

Edward's Comments:
"Edward's comments:
"The Stupidest Angel is a Christmas tale of beauty, hate, greed, love, power, death, secrets, murder, revelations, magic, miracles, resurrection, the inexplicable appearance of Star Trek shirts, and the sweet peppery taste of gunpowder. Every character is perfectly drawn -- even the bat. If you miss this book, then you'll spend Christmas wondering what the cool people are snickering about."" (read more)

Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid
by Jimmy Carter

Kevin's Comments:
"Kevin's comments:
"There is of course no compelling reason for Israel to continue its near forty year occupation of Palenstinian Land. There is no reason for the continued bulldozing of homes, seizing of more land, building of illegal settlements, rejection of U.N. Resolutions, wanton disregard for human rights and painfully complete and total subjegation of an entire people. But somehow many Americans lose sight of this when the subject of Israel comes up....President Carter should be applauded for shedding some needed and thoughtful light on this subject. His willingless to write truthfully about such charged and misunderstood subject matter will further enrich his historical reputation."" (read more)

How to Walk in High Heels: The Girl's Guide to Everything
by Camilla Morton

Danielle's Comments:
"Danielle's comments:
"Camilla Morton is an amazing writer, adding interesting and telling stories with each 'how-to' guide. I bought this book with intentions on learning how to walk better in high heels, but found myself using many of the guides on a daily basis! Morton is sometimes pretentious, but in sort of a hilarous way. After reading this book, I will never be caught looking bad in public again! The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters: A Novel
by Gordon Dahlquist

Katherine's Comments:
"Katherine's comments:
"Despite 760 pages, and despite a menagerie of unbelievably odd characters and weird events, this book captivated me six months ago, and I'm still awed by it. The three main characters are so unique that I can picture them in detail even now. As a contemporary mystery/thriller reader, I wouldn't have picked this book up had it not been given to me. But what a gift it became. If you own a cat, no matter whether a 'gentleman' cat or a lady cat, you'll find this first (cat) person story absolutely charming! It really, truly could have been written by a cat! The Tyrannicide Brief: The Story of the Man Who Sent Charles I to the Scaffold
The Tyrannicide Brief: The Story of the Man Who Sent Charles I to the Scaffold

Peter's Comments:
"Peter's comments:
"When Americans think of the moments that produced our legal system, the Revolution and the Civil War come immediately to mind. Few, myself included, realise how great a debt our Constitution owes to the Parliamentary victors in the English Civil Wars of the 1640s: the right to counsel, the right to know the evidence the prosecution relies on, the right to a public trial, the right of cross examination, the notion that all ? including the King ? are subject to the law....All came from the prosecutions of Charles I and his supporters, and they are largely attributable to John Cooke, the Solicitor General who tried the cases. The relevance of Robertson's book to the contemporary US will be clear within the first couple of pages. A first rate book. But one caution: some of the descriptions of 17th century executions are not for the faint of stomach. They can be skipped without loss."" (read more)

"Sarah's comments:
"This is a collection of WWI letters between a French soldier, Paul Pireaud, and his wife Marie, back home on the farm with his parents. The jewel of this book is the background information and analysis provided by Martha Hanna....The Pireauds' correspondence was far more about their feelings for each other than about what they saw around them or did in their daily lives. Humanure Handbook: A Guide To Composting Human Manure 3RD Edition

Julye's Comments:
"Julye's comments:
"A fantastic look at what we call 'waste.' One read changed my whole outlook on how wasteful modern society is. While reading about a topic that is 'taboo' to discuss these days, many points brought up other waste issues as well as some humorous insight into many cultures. The author is obivously more concerned with reducing the waste of valuable resources than making a profit and that makes it all the more worth the read."" (read more)

Persian Girls: A Memoir
Persian Girls: A Memoir
by Nahid Rachlin

Sarah's Comments:
"Sarah's comments:
"Nahid Rachlin starts her story with a loving, minutely detailed account of her early childhood in Teheran in the time of the Shah....The title of the book suggests that Rachlin is most interested in her close relationship with her sister, Pari. The love these two women have for each other is a powerful force in their lives, and their different paths illustrate how traditional Muslim society can limit women's lives. The author describes the quickly changing politics and societal expectations in Iran without rancor or hyperbole, including the overthrow of the Shah, the rise of Khomeini, and the presence in Iran of American politicians and oil workers. This helped me understand not only Iran better, but deepened my understanding of the Islamic fundamentalism which affects all our lives."" (read more)

The Fourth Bear: A Nursery Crime (Nursery Crime)
by Jasper Fforde

Nikki's Comments:
"Nikki's comments:
"Jasper Fforde is incredibly clever, and with this book the Nursery Crime series really seems to have gotten itself off the ground. His different plot lines never get confused...ideas and details which often would get lost in explanation (and such things are abundant) are instead mentioned casually, as though we're all reasonably familiar with blue aliens who speak binary. The world of his characters is as vivid as any author's depiction of our own. The combination of all these factors makes this book a fantastic read."" (read more)

Sometimes a Great Notion
Sometimes a Great Notion
by Ken Kesey

David's Comments:
"David's comments:
"This book is an American epic. It reminds me of what Gunther Grass's The Tin Drum did for WWII Germany. The character developement is phenomenal: rarely is a book capable of shifting the reader's sympathies between different characters, but that's just what Kesey does. The book's narration often jumps from character to character in the middle of a paragraph without any punctation, but the characters' voices are so well developed that the jumps aren't confusing....Sometimes A Great Notion is more than worthwhile for anyone willing to make the commitment.""
